In August of 2008 Boy Scout Troop 320 in Shapleigh has been selected to attend the Philmont Scout Ranch in Cimarron, New Mexico. This will be the Ultimate Hiking Trip for a Boy Scout Troop which calls itself the Ultimate Troop. Philmont is over 300,000 acres of mountains, valleys, and plateaus in northeastern New Mexico. At Philmont the activities include: Archaeology, Archery, Astronomy, Bikeathon, Black Powder Rifle, Blacksmithing, Burro Racing, Chuck Wagon Dinner, Fly Fishing, Gold Mining and Panning, Horse Riding, Jicarilla Apache Life, Land Navigation & GPS, Lumberjack Skills, Mountain Biking, Mountain Living and Mounain
Man Rendezvous, Rock Climbing, Shooting and Reloading 30/06, Shotgun Shooting, and
Wilderness 1st Aid. We also hope to do some Whitewater rafting and sightseeing. If you
would like to learn more about Philmont you can visit their link at: http://www.scouting.org/HighAdventure/Philmont.aspx. For many of the boys this trip will be a once in a lifetime experience. The boys are very excited about this invitation because a troop cannot go to a Philmont without an invitation from Philmont and the waiting list can be as long as 5 years or more. The cost to send each Scout to Philmont is around $1500.00, this also includes airfare, ground transportation, meals, and hotel when not at Philmont. As a troop, we need to raise over $25,000.00 so that every scout who wants to attend can do so without putting a financial burden on their families. The boys, leaders and parents have been working hard raising money with fundraisers, however rime is running short. We are asking our local business owners to help us in achieving this goal. These donations are tax deductible and any donation or assistance you could give us would be greatly appreciated. Donations can be mailed to Boy Scout Troop 320, c/o Dianne Dermody, Treasurer, 448 Ross Corner Road, Shapleigh, ME 04076. If you have any questions, please feel ree to call me (Jim Cortright, Fundraising Chairman Troop Committee) at 207-793-4662 or
e-mail me at jimcort@metrocast.net

Animal Welfare Society Promotes Responsible Cat Ownership, Sterilization and Awareness for Upcoming Kitten Season with Event. West Kennebunk, Maine - The Animal Welfare Society (AWS), a companion animal shelter, expects more than 1,000 cats and kittens to arrive needing care this spring. "Kitten Season" is an annual occurrence when cats give birth, beginning in spring, peaking in late spring and ending in the fall. In response to the yearly "kitten season," AWS will hold its 6th annual "Project Kitten" campaign to raise public awareness of the cat overpopulation problem in Southern Maine. Each year the Animal Welfare Society's "Project Kitten" generates much needed donations of supplies to help care for hundreds of anticipated new arrivals. Sponsored by Amica Insurance, PetSmart and Wright Express, responsible ownership, sterilization and awareness are central themes this year. The AWS is urging local schools, cub scout and girl scout troops, church groups, bridge clubs, bowling leagues, business and any other groups to take the "Project Kitten Challenge" by collecting the largest amount (in total weight) of desperately needed kitten supplies. Competing groups are asked to collect donations of Kitten Milk Replacement (KMR), dry and canned kitten food, cat litter and toys. Items can be delivered to AWS on Saturday, May 17th, between 12:00 and 2:00 pm. The public is invited to visit AWS for the "Kitten Shower" on May 17th from 12:00 to 3:00 pm, to bring individual donations and participate in educational and fun activities, learn more about fostering kittens, meet shelter staff and volunteers, and share the excitement of the official weigh-in ceremony. The winning group will be announced at 2:30 and will receive a prize, a feature in an upcoming AWS newsletter and will be on the AWS web site.
